Here is a historic piece of iridescent goethite from the gold-bearing Gossan area of this region. This specimen was collected between the 1940s and 1950s, according to the comments and explanations of the miner’s granddaughter. I visit the mine often, and today the Gossan area has practically disappeared; only a few inaccessible vestiges remain. Gossan is the name given to the surface oxidation zone or cap of these copper deposits; it is a rock composed of iron and copper oxides and was already exploited thousands of years ago due to the great wealth it contains of gold and silver.
