This highly unusual specimen from Trepča, Kosovo, displays a remarkable combination of minerals and crystal habits. At the base sits a group of well-formed calcite crystals showing excellent luster and pleasing transparency. Rising above is a bizarre and sculptural pyrite formation covered with countless sparkling microcrystals, giving the specimen a very dynamic appearance. Particularly striking is the intense orange-brown alteration zone separating the calcite from the pyrite, creating a vivid color contrast and adding an extra level of visual interest to this distinctive piece from one of Europe’s most famous mining districts.
