Spectacular group of black obsidian nodules, a variety known as Apache tears. These nodules are covered by a white to gray glassy layer of pearlite, which is in turn coated or intergrown between layers of yellow montmorillonite.
This type of obsidian is found in only a few deposits in the world and is known here by locals as “cat’s claw.”
The pearlite that forms the matrix of these obsidians is actually a primary hydration of the obsidians, and the montmorillonite in this deposit is in turn a devitrification of the pearlite.
These specimens were found in 2005 in Mezquita quarry, and today it is impossible to obtain specimens of this type.
